In 1949 there were huge railroad yards at Weehawken, and huge ferries / barges to carry freight and passenger cars across the river Hudson to Manhatten.

These yards are now history, but you can see from the pictures below how it looked like around 1949 when the Merci boxcars were loaded onto US-flat-cars on the pier.
