Most of the information below has been collected from old newspaper articles. [ Caution : 15+ MB content ].

When researching the "Merci Train" it is important to distinguish between :
  • The individual boxcar given to a state.
  • The "Merci Train" as a name for the 49 boxcars sent by France.
  • The "Merci Train" as the name for the transport of the boxcars to each individual state :
    The 3 sections : Northern - Southern - Western.
  • The contents - gifts - that were in each boxcar.
  • The fact that "The "40 & 8 Society's" made replicas, of varying likeness, of the French boxcar to use as floats in parades.

Using various search words and combinations of words is necessary :
"Merci Train" - "Gratitude Train" - "merci / gratitude car" - "merci / gratitude / French boxcar".

Present day ( 2015 ).

The Delaware boxcar is standing under a shelter on the grounds of the

"American Legion", Nanticoke Post 6,
230 Front Street,
Seaford,
Delaware 19973.

The American Legion is on → Facebook where there are several pictures ( 2010 - present day ) of the boxcar.

It is not known when it was moved to Seaford. what

It is now red, and therefore re-painted. When what and why red what

The boxcar is owned and maintained by the "Sussex County - 40&8 Society - Voiture No. 1320".

It can be viewed from the pavement / sidewalk on the corner of Front Street and E. Poplar Street. You might, technically, be trespassing if you walk onto the grounds / lawn of the American Legion, but I presume they will only be happy that someone takes an interest in the boxcar.

The boxcar can also be seen on Google Streetview.

Below you can see my own photos of the boxcar.

The Delaware boxcar has been renovated nicely. Why the red color was chosen is anyone's guess.

The coat-of-arms are relatively OK. The heraldic signs are nicely done, but the names of the French regions are completely missing. There are also only 24, out of 40, coat-of-arms.

The banners "Gratitude Train" and "Train de la Reconnaissance Francaise" are actually very true to the original banners.

The other 3 original shields, ( "Merci Train logo" - "American Eagle" - "State designation" ), are completely missing.

Details about the Delaware boxcar

See also my own photos below

To be further researched.

Everything on the body is not original. The "PLM" and the "HOMMES 40" are signs, but should have been painted on the body.

The replica PLM sign states that the boxcars French number was "130 092".

On the frame / chassis you can still find some original signs / castings :

Metal plate : "P.L.M. ?? - 130 092". Since there is no brake-mans cabin the pre-face letters most likely were "Kw". There is room for 2 characters.

The boxcar is without a brake-mans cabin but with shutters, so it would fall under this category at WIKI - PLM.
The # 130 092 is on this sub-page at WIKI - PLM.

It appears that this type of boxcar was built in 1890-1891 - originally wtih 3 axles, but the middle axle was removed around 1901 - 1902.

The "40&8 Society" has placed an un-original metal sign on the side of the boxcar. The letters on the signs are barely readable :
Line 1 - ar
Line 2 - xxxxxxx by the french national railroad(s)
Line 3 - -to the state of-
Line 4 - -delaware-
Line 5 - -in gratitude for the help given to france-
Line 6 - -by the american people-
Line 7 - -owned & maintained by-
Line 8 - -voiture locale no 1320-
Line 9 - -sussex county delaware-

The wheel bearings are cast-dated "10 H 1903" - "10 H 1898". There are also casted "28003 BOUTMY & Ci" and "28184 LAPIQUE" onto the bearings.

On the wagon-frame you can see a faint cast : "CREUSO"

On the buffers there is casted "PLM" - "BUSSY" and "34339" - "XX753"

On www.mercitrain.org you can find a foto of the vase.
It appears that the "Delaware State Museum" received 3 gifts, but on www.mercitrain.org there are fotos of at least 7 gifts :
      1. Dish 1.
      2. Dish 2.
      3. Wallpaper.
      4. Manuscript - Book - "Monographie".
      5. Manuscript - Book - "Gorges".
      6. Manuscript - Book - "Brigands".
      7. Black vase.
The vase appears on www.mercitrain.org with a photo.
Since the 3 gifts, allocated to the "Delaware State Museum" already has been identified ( above : dish 1 - dish 2 - wallpaper ) and since the → "Special Collections Department" does NOT mention the vase, it would appear logical to assume that the vase was allocated to a, so far, unknown recipient.
  61. NEXT GIFT.

About Albert Carrière

During my research of the gifts from the Delaware boxcar, I especially noticed the 3 gifts and a letter from Albert Carrière because it was one of the few times that the gift-giver is known by name.

Thanks to the internet I found that Albert Carrière (1872-1957) was a french writer, a school-teacher in "Peyreleau" ( a municipality in "Aveyron" in the "Massif Central" ) and a researcher in archeology and local history.

He was the great-uncle of Pierre Carrière, who is the author of the website → Le cirque de Barrosa.

Albert Carrière is mentioned on → this sub-page.

I emailed Pierre Carrière and told him about the gifts from his grand-uncle - gifts that still were at the University of Delaware Library.

I asked him if he had any further information about Albert Carrière - who he was and how it came that he gave these apparently original manuscripts to the "Merci Train".

I received some very friendly emails - last one with photos :

Translation to English :

[...] I am both happy, touched and astonished to know that some of the works of my great-uncle, Albert Carrière, are in a museum in the state of Delaware as gifts to the USA as a thank-you for the help during and after the last war.

I do not know why he thought that these brochures could be used as gifts.

I will look for and collect information about my great-uncle, especially photos, and I will send these to you within a few days.

In 1999 a book was dedicated to him. I am going to re-read it and check if its still available.

I thank you for having taken an interest in him. [...]
[...] Je vous adresse en pices jointes quelques documents, peu nombreux, sur mon grand-oncle, Albert Carrière :
  • une photo d'Albert Carrière (1872-1957) et de son epouse, Albina Alvernhe (1876-1970), prise lors d'un mariage le 10 Mai 1930 ;
  • la meme photo, avec A. Carrière seul ;
  • 3 cartes :
    • pour localiser (le point rouge), dans les departements franais la region de Peyreleau (ou A. Carrière a ete longtemps instituteur)
    • pour situer la region de Peyreleau dans la massif Central (et non dans les Pyrenees : le cirque de Barrosa auquel est consacre mon site web y est situe mais j'y ai fait une digression pour parler d'un sentier en corniche, comme celui de ce cirque, mais situe au-dessus de Peyreleau, dans l'Aveyron) ;
    • une carte de la region de Peyreleau pour situer ce village, celui de Saint-Leons ou est ne A. Carrière, Millau, et les gorges de la Jonte. [...]
Translation to English :

[...] I hereby send you the attached few documents regarding my great-uncle, Albert Carrière :
  • a photo of Albert Carrière ( 1872 - 1957 ) and his wife, Albina Alvernhe ( 1876 - 1970 ), taken at their wedding on May 10, 1930.
  • the same photo but with only Albert Carrière
  • 3 maps
    • in order to pinpoint the region "Peyreleau", where Andre Carrière for a long time was a schoolteacher, amongst the French "departments"
    • in order to place the region "Peyreleau" in the "Massif Central". Peyreleau is situated in the "Massif Central" and not in the Pyrenees. However the → Le cirque de Barrosa is in fact in the Pyrenees.
[ I originally made the mistake of placing "Peyreleau" in the Pyrenees - this has now been corrected ].
    • a map of the "Peyreleau" region to pinpoint the village "Saint-Leons" where Albert Carrière was born, the city of "Milau" and the "gorges de la Jonte". [ which Albert Carrière had written about ]. [...]

My photos of the "Merci Train" boxcar in Delaware

Location :
"American Legion", Nanticoke Post 6, 230 Front Street, Seaford, Delaware 19973.

The boxcar can be viewed from the pavement / sidewalk on the corner of Front Street and E. Poplar Street. You might, technically, be trespassing if you walk onto the grounds / lawn of the American Legion, but I presume they will only be happy that someone takes an interest in the boxcar.

You can download my Google Earth kmz-file with the positions of all the remaining 43 boxcars.
